The Jamaican Folk Singers will be staging its 2009 concert season, Uplift Jamaica, from September 5-13 at the Little Theatre, Tom Redcam Avenue.

"Uplift Jamaica will take us down memory lane, reliving the community work experience, the excitement of market, the justice system and the joy of the celebration of marriage," said a press release.

Special guest performers include renowned Jamaican actress Leonie Forbes and Lilieth Nelson. Additionally, the group will share its experiences over the past four months of its 'Uplift Jamaica' island tour and will perform folk music arranged by the group's founder, Dr Olive Lewin.

Major fund-raiser

This concert season serves as the major fund-raiser for the group, with part proceeds going towards the Jamaica Library Service for the purchase of children's books.

The group thanked its two major partners for making the forthcoming concert season possible.

"The CHASE Fund and Mother's have recognised the contributions that the Jamaican Folk Singers has made to Jamaica's cultural development, and also recognise the need to help the group to continue to fulfil its mandate as we proudly embrace our responsibility as an agent of cultural reproduction in Jamaica," said the release.

Showtime on Friday and Saturday is 8 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The Jamaican Folk Singers is a non-profit singing group which was formed in 1967 by Dr Lewin.
