FORMER St Jago High athlete Andrea Linton tuned up for next weekend's SEC Indoor Collegiate Track and Field Championships with a qualifying mark in the women's long jump at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Invitational meet on Friday.

Linton, a final-year student at LSU, leapt 6.18 metres to win the event. It was also a good meet for her teammate Samantha Henry, as the former Queen's School athlete took second in the 60 metres, also in an Indoor provisional time of 7.37 seconds. Former LSU standout Trinidad and Tobago Olympian Kellyann Baptiste took the event in 7.28 seconds.

There was also a second-place finish for Olympian Nickeisha Wilson. Wilson, now a professional athlete, posted a mark of 8.26 seconds for the runner-up spot in the women's 60 metres hurdles. Her former teammate at LSU, Jessica Ohanaya, won the event in the same time. Former Immaculate High athlete Kimberly Laing, competing for Alabama University, ended fifth in 8.48.

There was a third-place finish for World Junior 100 metres silver medallist Shermaine Williams at the Virginia Technical Challenge in Blackburgh as she clocked 8.40. Division II indoor 400 metres champion Leford Green was disqualified in the men's 200 metres after a false start.

strong messages

Following their good early season form, the Victor 'Poppy' Thomas-coached Lincoln University athletes sent strong messages two weeks before the Division II Indoor Championships with some quality perfor-mances at the Missouri Collegiate meet. Leading the way was former G.C. Foster College athlete Kewayne Fisher, who took the 60 metres in 6.84 seconds. Teammate and former Camperdown High school sprinter Dwaine Bryden took second in 6.88.

Lincoln University swept the men's 200 metres as another former G.C. Foster College athlete (Gavin Terrelonge) won in 22.15 seconds. Former Camperdown High athlete Kimour Bruce (22.18) and Bryden (22.23) took the other top-two spots.
