Heineken brings Bas to Style Mecca
published: Sunday | May 25, 2008

Eclectic, colourful and extravagant designs are what Bas Kosters, fashion designer, promises at Fashion Block and Style Mecca in New Kingston later today.

The Amsterdam designer is set to showcase not only items inspired by Heineken, the main sponsor of Style Week events, but a collection of clothing gathered from his archives.

Just minutes off the plane he spoke exclusively with The Sunday Gleaner at our North Street headquarters on Friday.

"I'm showing two different collections and they're actually put together especially for this. It's going to be very exciting to show only with dark-skinned girls, Jamaican models," Bas said, as it is a first for him.

In March 2006, Bas showcased outfits bearing the Heineken name because of the strong influence he thought the product has on society.

"This is a collection that I made from my own motivation because I was really inspired by how Heineken took over the world, and I noticed Heineken's presence everywhere I went in my short career. So, for me, it was an inspiration to take on this material and make it a part of my own collection," the 30-year-old said.

No restrictions on designs

Otherwise, the designer, who also makes dolls, does graphics and paints, does not restrict his designs to age, income bracket or clothing size. He simply makes clothes for strong women who want to express themselves. Last year, he did a show on the red carpet culture and its influence on what is considered beautiful.

"I wanted to protest against it and show that individual beauty is something you should be proud of, so I showed a large variety of women in different shapes and sizes," he said.

His designs are distributed through shops in Holland and Germany, and he's working on a website to allow individuals to purchase items online.
