THE EDITOR, Sir:
I write to support the call made my members of the agricultural sector for the Government to take speedy and firm action to stem the rise of praedial larceny which has been plaguing the livestock sector in the country for some time.
I believe that the proposal for central abattoirs in all towns, the imposition of stiffer penalties, and the need to obtain a licence before the slaughtering of animals will go a far way to discourage the criminal activity which has been discouraging many farmers from continuing in producing livestock. Let's not forget that a reduction in production leads to a greater reliance on imported products and therefore puts a strain on the country for foreign exchange. We should be able to satisfy our local consumption needs but that has not nearly been the case for some time now.
It is my belief that as the Honourable Prime Minister and others have said on numerous occasions, the provision of employment opportunities will significantly reduce the impetus to engage in criminal activity.
I am, etc.,
