Contractor General to report on UDC documents today
published: Friday | September 15, 2006

Christie

Contractor General Greg Christie will today make a statement on documents presented by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), to substantiate statements made by the entity on the controversial Sandals Whitehouse hotel project in Westmoreland.

The document, which is expected to prove that consultants engaged on the project were hired prior to the establishment of public sector procurement guidelines, was reportedly submitted to the Office of the Contractor General, Wednesday night.

Mr. Christie had challenged the Government entity to support claims made in a full-page advertisement published in The Gleaner earlier this month, making the assertions.

Public misled

The Contractor General, in a letter released on Tuesday at Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, said the UDC deliberately misled the public on the matter of its procurement activities as they relate to the Sandals Whitehouse project.

The project, on which a forensic audit was recently done and which highlighted poor management practices, was hit with cost overruns of over US$43 million (J$2.8 billion).
