Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has downplayed the departure of Winston Dookeran from the opposition benches, saying his move would not hurt the party's work in parliament.

"We still have the majority of members in opposition to the government. Even before this we had the majority and that majority has not changed," Persad-Bissessar reportedly told a local newspaper from abroad.

"We will continue what we have been doing, which is to be a responsible opposition, to mark the challenges as watchdog for the rights and freedoms of the citizens," Persad-Bissessar said.
