Simpson, Jones in Swiss showdown
published: Tuesday | July 11, 2006

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

JAMAICA'S SHERONE Simpson and Marion Jones are set for another showdown, while Usain Bolt and Wallace Spearmon go head-to-head at today's Athletissima meeting in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

Simpson, who holds the season's fastest 100m time - 10.82 seconds, faces a strong challenge from Jones who defeated her at last Saturday's Paris Golden League.

It will be Jones' second race on the European circuit for the past two seasons, as she was shunned by several meet organisers since being linked to the BALCO doping scandal in the United States.

Jones has denied all charges and has never tested positive for any performance-enhancing substances.

"We think that in some way she's served her sentence," Athletissima spokesman Pierre-Andre Pasche was quoted as saying.

The field will include World champion Lauryn Williams and her American teammate Me'Lisa Barber, along with Bahamian Debbie Ferguson and Chandra Sturrup.

In the men's 200m, Jamaica's World Junior 200m record holder Bolt aims to upset joint world leader American cham-pion Spearmon.

The two last met at the Reebok Grand Prix in the United States, but Spearmon, who shares the world leading time of 19.90 with World 100m record holder Asafa Powell, came out on top.

Tyson Gay, who finished second behind Bolt at the Jamaica International Invitational, Francis Obikwelu of Portugal and the United States' LaShawn Merritt, round off the top class field.

Brigitte Foster-Hylton, who dropped out of contention for a share of the Golden League US$1m jackpot with her third place finish in last Saturday's Golden League, and Delloreen Ennis-London, are down to face World champion Michelle Perry and her American teammates Jenny Adams and Lo Lo Jones, as well as Glory Alozie of Spain in a crack sprint hurdles field.

TRIPLE JUMP

World champion Trecia Smith will line-up against Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva of Russia in the triple jump.

World Championships silver medallist Michael Frater and Dwight Thomas are down for the men's 100m where they will face Olusoji Fasuba, who ran a surprising 9.84 seconds in the race where Justin Gatlin equalled the 100m world record in 9.77 seconds.

American Shawn Crawford and Darrell Brown and Marc Burns of Trinidad & Tobago are also in the men's 100m field.

Jermaine Gonzales, and Brandon Simpson who switched to Bahrain, race against each other in the men's 400m.

Maurice Wignall is down to face Americans Terrence Trammell and Allen Johnson and China's Olympic champion Xiang Liu in the men's 110m hurdles.

Dean Griffiths and Danny McFarlane will face the starter in the men's 400m hurdles.
