Ashleigh Campbell of the Catherine Hall Primary and Infant School in Montego Bay, is a Scotiabank scholarship winner.
WESTERN BUREAU:
Of the almost two hundred students who sat the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) from the Catherine Hall Primary and Infant School, 12-year-old Ashleigh Campbell was the only student to receive a scholarship for her performance.
Ashleigh is the recipient of the Scotiabank scholarship for the top performer in the county of Cornwall.
"I was really excited about my scholarship because my teachers told me that I might be able to get one and I did," she told The Gleaner.
She said that although she studied hard for the exams, she tried not too push herself too much.
"I studied but not too much because I did not want to study everything and then end up not remembering anything."
Ashleigh spoke highly of her teachers, who she said did everything in their power to ensure that the students fully grasped what they were being taught.
She was especially thankful to teacher Dudley Jennings, whom she said is her role model.
"Mr. Jennings is my role model because he was always there to encourage me not to give up. When we do not understand something, he would go it over and over until it was fully understood," said the youngster.
PLANS TO CONTINUE DOING WELL
Ashleigh will be attending Montego Bay High School in September.
"I expect to use the same method I used during GSAT and just continue to do well because I don't want to be a drop out," she said.
When she is not studying she loves to surf the Internet. At Catherine Hall Primary, she was an active member of the Brownies, Environment and Red Cross clubs.
Mr. Jennings said, "She is an excellent student. She is focused and knows what she wants. I felt extremely good to hear of her achievement, but judging by her level of work I knew she would have done well."
