New police HQ on track for Jamintel building
published: Tuesday | July 11, 2006

PREPARATIONS FOR the relocation of the police headquarters to the former Jamintel building on Duke Street, downtown Kingston, are proceeding apace, according to Dr. Peter Phillips, the Minister of National Security.

While not confirming a timetable for the move, the minister said much of the preparatory work was under way. These, he said, included "... a lot of design work, equipment being examined and ordered for the command facilities."

It was announced last year that members of the Police High Command would be moving out of their Old Hope Road, St. Andrew, headquarters, to make way for a housing development.

The proposed move downtown by the police commissioner and other senior officers has attracted commendations by those clamouring for the resuscitation of the older section of the capital city. Critics, on the other hand, have expressed strong reservations about the move, citing, among other things, the perception that the high-rise building would be too exposed and vulnerable to attacks.
